Michelle Obama and What Would It Be Like to Be First Lady

For some reason I have never really cared for Michelle Obama and I am not sure why. David came home the other night and asked if I had seen her speech. I had not. He tells me that I might like her more after the speech. Really, I am skeptical. I am a cynic and pessimistic and I always think they just say what I want to hear but do they really mean it. The next day I decided to see what she was talking about so I watched it. I have to say she was good. It did make me like her a little more. I think her and her husband are wonderful speakers. They know just what to say. I am not sure if that is them or a great team of people, probably both. They always know what to say to address situations and make it work for them.

The thing though that I really started to think about is what did she say when he came to her and said I want to be President. Did she say no way you are crazy we have young kids or did she say that would be great. I cannot remember if she has ever talked about this before. I think I cannot even hardly get it together to raise my two children, be a wife, plan Girl Scouts, and have a little bit of my own life. I cannot imagine wanting to add First Lady onto that. I thought of the kids and how does that work out. I know that have a lot of help but still. I remember how much they picked on Chelsea in her awkward years. She seems to have turned out ok even though she had to endure a lot in her young life. Can you imagine constantly seeing your parents being ripped apart all the time in the press. I think of Obama's children and how young they are. Would it be a good life or difficult? Can you imagine if your kids started acting up on stage, it is bad enough in a grocery store. If he is President would Michelle lose her identity as the First Lady or do you gain one? I think she is very brave to do all this. I cannot imagine giving a speech at the Democratic Convention where the Democrats are probably putting so much pressure on you to be amazing and the Republicans are waiting for you to mess up. In fact that goes for both parties all the time. As the wife they are just waiting for you to do something to pounce on. They don't just make personal attacks about the one ruining but about their family also. I don't think I could take this. I cannot stand all the attacks on each other. I have to say these women must be very strong. I think of Hilary too, some like her some don't but when it comes down to it she was a wife who was cheated on and a mother of a daughter who people often made fun of. They slammed Hilary all the time and she had to endure all this in the public eye. Not my idea of a good time how do you think you would handle all of this?

How Many House Do I have? Oh Yea Just One.

John McCain cannot remember how many houses he has. What? How can you not remember that? I am in no way saying I am a John McCain supporter but Obama sure was quick to jump on an easy target. He could have taken the high road and said nothing but he did not. In fact I heard what he said and it made Obama look really good and McCain look bad. It was a really great speech. It made McCain look so out of touch with most Americans and maybe he really is. I like to look at both sides though so here is how I can understand where McCain is coming from. I often forget the name of someone I am starring at. My brain just kinds of goes blank sometimes when I am put on the spot. I really know it but for some reason it escapes me at the time I need to say it. I admit that is not good when you are President but then does he really need to know the number of houses he has to be President. It is also possible that some of those are for investment purposes or tax purposes only and so he really does not think about them. He has enough money for people to handle them so maybe he really does not know how many he owns. I don't think it is a big of a deal as they have made it out to be today. Obama did really use it to his advantage and I am not sure if I think that is a good or a bad thing yet.

Politics, Kind of

So I don't talk politics to often, only with my husband, because it can turn into a very heated debate. The thing is this is not completely a political issue. The thing I hate is when someone gets on their high horse about how they stand for morality and family and then turn around and cheat on their spouse. I say spouse because I do not want to exclude women, they do cheat too. I don't like preachy people to begin with. We all get up on our soap box every now and then about something, that is fine. It is the people who feel the need to tell me what to do all the time and then they don't live up to it. I don't like it when they live up to it either, but that is beside the point. The other thing that I hate is after they cheat and the get caught they make their spouse stand up there with them as they announce it. So not only did you cheat but know you make the person stand up there and be humiliated even farther. I liked John Edwards, although he always seemed a little to perfect. No ones perfect. I do like that he is standing up and saying basically that he is a jerk and is taking full responsibility and that in his interview that I saw he did not make his wife sit there. Yes I know he should say that but so many don't. It seems like they are to busy trying to save face and are not as honest as he was. This does not excuse what he did.

On the other hand.
Why is it our business that he had an affair? Why do we need to know? Supposedly he told his wife several years ago and they dealt with it. I read an article that said his career is over. Why? Other politicians and high power figures are doing just fine after having an affair as long as they did not do anything illegal along with it. So why would they say that about him. My husband thinks it is because his wife has cancer. So the public goes along with it unless the spouse is sick? Kind of reminds me of how we go along with violence in movies until there is a child or animal involved and then we think it went to far. The thing I learned a long time ago is that people can be very different at work then they are at home. Some of the most successful people are terrible at relationships. I am not saying that I think cheating is good. It is bad but my understanding is it is not illegal and really none of our business. It is between the two of them and should have nothing to do with us. I did read some very fascinating articles that would tell me otherwise but it was not enough to convince me. I am not sure it would be the soul factor in determining my vote. If that was the only thing that I could find that I did not like about someone I might still vote for them. I am still not sure John McCain did not have an affair. The article made it sound like it was unclear for sure when he separated from his first wife and got together with his current wife. I don't know, I have not really looked into it farther because is that going to impact how he does as president? I don't think that cheating on your wife has anything to do with education, foreign policy, the economy, or global warming. The only way it would interfere is if it was distracting him currently. I hope no one takes this wrong I don't think cheating should be taken lightly but I also am really tired of it taking up the news when I think other things are more important. I know we all have different opinions, just my thoughts.

On a side note I do love the blog because although I have my opinions I love to hear things from different points of views. Sometimes it even makes me think about something in a way I never did before and I have been known to change my mind. I am independent, probably because I could not make up my mind at 18. See several posts ago when I said that I am indecisive. I guess I tend to lean Democrat but I do vote for Republicans also. I often seem to be surrounded by more Democrats so I will find myself listening to republican radio or talk shows just to get a different view. It is funny how sometimes the sides are not that far off from each other it is just the extremists or the media that make it seem so. I know there are several key issues that make a big difference between the two but I think in general we all care about similar things we just have different ways of going about it. At least this is what I would like to believe and hope is true.

I agree that these personal issues with the politicians should be just that - personal. I think where John Edwards went wrong is he lied about it when the press found out. That bugs me. He knew they wouldn't let it drop, so what was lying going to get him. Then it becomes a whole honesty thing.

I wondered whether the stress of this affair brought back her cancer. The timing is suspicious.

I do think we expect perfection and it is an impossible expectation. But, in today's environment of sensational media, I would think these people would know they aren't going to get away with much!

I do agree the lying part does bug me. I also agree that if I were in the spotlight all the time I think I would try to me on my best behavior. They always get caught so you think someone would learn by now. I heard John Edwards say that he just felt on top of the world and did not think it through and did not think anyone would know. He is in the public eye how would no one find out? It makes me mad the more I think about it but I still go back to it is really none of my business. Also maybe he was lying to protect his family from all the media attention they are getting now. Of course he should have thought about that before he had the affair. He did let a lot of people down and that is really sad. It would be nice for just once to have a politician get up there and be upfront and honest, although maybe no one would vote for them.

I am furious with John Edwards, but not because of his affair. I think that is between he and his wife. I'm mad because he only told the truth when the press got wind of this story. I have become such a cynic. My husband tells me so everyday. I don't feel like anyone has the good of the country in mind anymore, just how they can benefit. Makes me sad, and angry especially in this type of economy.

What is it about the Twilight Series?

What is it about these books. These books have taken over my life the last two weeks and why? Why is it that I can read these books fairly fast and not want to put them down but any other book I have read for the last several years, even ones that I like, are not that way. Looking back there are parts of the books that I would read and think really is this going to far now or that just seems weird but yet I would read on like it was a drug I had to have. I even tried to pace myself and not get the next book for a few days but I found myself wanting to get it to have it right then. I even felt funny when I gave the first book to Lauren at pick up to give to Susan. I thought maybe I should have put it in a brown paper bag so it did not look weird that I was giving this book to a child. I feel like I am passing on some kind of drug. It really has consumed me. Again I ask why? What is it about the story or her writing that does that. The really odd thing is that the four books are roughly around 2500 pages and I still feel like she did not give enough detail in certain parts. I am really kind of glad that there are only four books. It has really tired me out. Am I just strange? I know my husband thinks so right now? At least I have finished them all and go back to my life.

I waited to read them until just before school got out in case I got hooked. Obviously, I did. They are an easy read, maybe that is one of the reasons people love them. I loaned them to Mrs. Yeargain at school, she is hooked as well. She told me they are written at a fifth grade reading level. Hmmm, perfect for busy people.

Angry

I was reading the article about the father who said he left his 2 year old daughter with a babysitter he found on cragslist and that she left the 2 year old alone. The 2 year old then wondered around and was found by the front of an apartment complex. I heard today that he never hired a babysitter at all and they think that he left her alone in the apartment while he went to work. This makes me mad for obvious reasons. That poor 2 year old was wondering around for who knows how long and it is amazing nothing happened to her. I also get mad though because there are so many people who want to have children and cannot. They would make great parents and then here this guy is with a child who he does not even take care of. I understand people have to work and that he might not of had anyone to watch her, I don't know his story, but you just cannot leave a child like that. Anyway that is my rant for today.

I did read about this. Not too brilliant of a situation. I have heard or seen on TV, can't remember which, that some people have had good luck hooking up with a sitter on Craigslist. I don't think I would ever do that, that there are better, more safe ways to find someone to care for your kids. But, I understand the difficulties or working parents, especially those that have unforgiving bosses. Hopefully, the child will have little, if any, memory of it moving forward.
