Looking At The Other Side
I often disagree with the Mormon Religion. I have had friends who are Mormons but they are not really close friends any more. The Religion and lifestyle seem to different to greatly from mine I guess. I am not going to bad mouth them I just want to relate a story that I read and then how I felt about it.
I was blog stocking, surprise, surprise. I came across a post about someone who goes to coffee shops on cold days and gets hot chocolate. As a Mormon you are not suppose to drink coffee. He said that they put it in the same cups everyone has for coffee and he began to wonder if someone say him there would they think he was drinking coffee. He said he would if he saw someone else with that coffee cup. He then said he would still love them but maybe just a little bit less then he did before.
My initial reaction was seriously. You are really going to love someone less because they drink coffee. Then I did something I am trying more of these days I took a step back and thought about it. Is there anything that I would look a someone and maybe love them just a little less because of it? It is smoking. I would still love you but it would really bother me.
I then had this exact same conversation with my husband. First I think he was surprised by the fact that I took the other side and really looked at it and he to saw it for a moment in a different perspective. He then said he thought it was a little different because smoke can affect everyone around them and coffee really does not.
I still have to say for once I have a slightly better understanding of their thought process. I am not very optimistic it will happen again but you never know. You have to keep and open mind.

Does it Really Matter?
People say that if we let Gays and Lesbians get married that it will ruin the sanctity of marriage. Really? It has not already been ruined by the number of people cheating on each other and that the divorce rate is 50%. It does not change my marriage if you let them get married. I don't understand why it cannot be legal for two people of consenting age to get married legally. I get it if Religions don't want to accept it and refuse to marry them or acknowledge a marriage. Church and State are suppose to be separate though right? If two people are legally married by the government does that really mess up the beliefs of religions. Are they really hurting anyone? It is not like they are trying to convert the world to their ways. Yes, there are over the top Gays, just like there are over the top Religions, and over the top Politicians. I personally just don't see what the big deal is. No one has presented an argument yet that makes me believe different.

I read about this in this morning's paper. I think he has a holier than thou attitude and for some reason just thinks he is invincible! I am glad that one of the victims taped it and glad he was found guilty.
But, I do think that it had to have been next to impossible to not have your judgment clouded, at least a little bit, by his history.
It will be interesting to hear his sentence.
One thing I thought was funny was the lack of media attention. They said some days the courtroom was 1/2 full. People moved on to the economy and the election. He loves that attention, so he must have been so disappointed! - October 4, 2008 11:08 AM

Health Care
A lot has been said about Health Care lately. It was even talked about yesterday at lunch; I caught some of it and missed some of it. The thing is what do you do about Health Care? Is there really a fix to it? I am not so sure. You will never make everyone happy, there are to many people in this country to do that. Is there really anyone to blame for Health Care being so bad? My husband keeps talking about socialized medicine, but they have problems with that too.
It has become this vicious cycle. Health Care cost are more expensive because of malpractice, more people using insurance, going to ER’s instead of Family Practices and many other reasons. More claims are being paid out probably because we are living longer and it seems there are a lot more medical issues with people. Is that because we are not taking care of ourselves or is it just the way it is now? Then insurance companies have to raise their premiums and look at what they should pay or not pay.
It is hard because I think patients are mad at the treatment they get. Doctors and Nurses are probably overworked and have to be more careful how they handle treatment of people. I remember someone saying one time how it was hard to find Labor and Delivery Nurses because it was mostly paperwork and the nurses hated it. I am not sure if that is true but that would be no fun to get into nursing and then do paperwork all day.
I don’t know what it is like to be a Nurse or a Doctor I just know what it is like to be a patient and many times it sucks.
Since I have only had a blog a short time I was not able to rant and rave about these medical experiences so I figured it was a good time. Before I rant and rave let me tell you there are many good experiences that I have had and many great doctors that I have had. They are not all bad.
When I had Ainsley my first Nurse was wonderful my second not so good in my opinion. In her defense, although it is kind of hard for me to defend her, I think she thought she was sticking up for me. Ainsley was turned the opposite of what the baby is suppose to be and coming out forehead first (they are suppose to come out the back of the head first for those that did not know, if any). The Doctor had already mentioned a c-section as a possibility. They started to have me push and after about 10 minuets the Doctor and the Nurse turned to the monitor and started to argue about the heart rate. Not comforting when the Doctor and Nurse argue in front of you. It showed Ainsley’s heart rate was going down, but the Nurse insisted it was my heart rate that was being picked up during contraction. So they screwed the monitor into her head. Then they went back to looking at the monitor. I have to say even thought David was there I felt very alone at this point. I was not sure if I was supposed to be pushing or what I was doing the both focused on the monitor. You would think just the Doctor would need to do that but then what do I know I am not a Doctor or a Nurse that is why I go to see them for help. They continued to argue until the Doctor decided I need a c-section and he left the room to get ready. The nurse continued to tell me I did not need one and he just wanted to go home because he had been there all day and it was Christmas so he was doing it unnecessarily. What was I suppose to do with this. I decided to have one but questioned my decision and started having what I think was a panic attack.
When I got upstairs after she was born the nurses yelled at me because I could not remember what formula I had given her before. I was slightly out of it at this point. I was very medicated and tired. I was seeing live fish on the bathtub and western scenes and cowboys were riding over the horizon. Did not really help at that point to have them yell at me. I was barely functioning. By the way I did not want to give her formula in the first place but was persuaded or pushed into it when Ainsley would not latch on. I was looked at like I was crazy when I got scared because she was throwing up blood and they all thought I should just calm down. No one ever bothered to tell me before this moment that when you have a child who is a c-section baby it is possible to have some of the blood that was around them in there lungs still because it did not get squeezed out in delivery or so this is what they told be after the fact. I had the pediatrician and the nurse disagree with each other. What do you believe when every doctor and nurse tell you a different story?
Everyone is different and I think it things need to be looked at on a case-by-case basis. I went into a doctor one time and told him I had a UTI. He said I don’t have the symptoms of one and therefore he did not think I had one but just to make me happy he would run the test. Guess what I had and he had to eat his words. I learned years before that mine were not like that. I was having surgery for endometriosis and they did pre-op tests. After surgery I could not figure out why it seemed worse this time then last. It seemed like it took a long time to heal. I figured they just did more this time. At my three-week appointment he said did you take all your meds for the UTI. The nurse was suppose to call me and give me a prescription but never did. I had no idea that is what it was because I had never had one before and you always here of what the normal symptoms are so I never imagined it was that.
Between Abby and Ainsley I found a lump in my breast. I worried but did not worry too much. I had an ultrasound that showed the lump. The surgeon watched it for 5 months and I thought he would say it was fine and send me on my way. It did not go away and it changed shape so he wanted to do a needle biopsy. Before I go farther with this story I will say let this be a lesson to you and it was to me to make sure you know exactly what the procedure entails. They would not let David go in with me. They explained something about the anesthesiologist putting a needle in and using an ultrasound to find the spot. It sounded right to me. They then said they would take me upstairs to do the procedure. So this did sound strange but I thought they wanted to find it first would mark it and then use a needle to take it out and maybe they could not do it in the room I was in. I think I did ask something about this being strange but the answered and looked at me strange. They put something into me that hurt. I thought it was something to numb me so they could do the biopsy. The problem was it just hurt more and more. I could not see what they were doing so I was not sure. It got worse and I kept asking if this was normal it was not what I expected but she said something’s that made sense. Of course I was nervous and David was not there. They then took me upstairs where the person said I was not on the list for anything today. It took them a long time to figure things and then they came and took me back, without David again, and the Doctor explained to me that the people downstairs got it confused and thought that I was having a lumpectomy and not just a needle biopsy, big difference. It did not fully set in though at this point. The doctor said he had time and would go ahead and do it since I was prepped for it. I still had that pain in my breast and I was not sure why. They took me to the bathroom and gave me a gown and said to change. This is where it all clicked and I realized how stupid I was. I went to take off my shirt and a presenting pain went through my left side. I pulled my shirt back to discover a needle sticking out of my left breast. I about passed out and I started to cry. Again David is nowhere around. I realized they put a needle in me to leave in me to mark the spot because they all thought I was having a lumpectomy. No wonder they kept looking at me crazy when I kept asking why it still hurt and why it was not numb yet. Remember I had thought they were supposed to numb it. I felt so, so dumb to not have realized what was going on. To not have looked down sooner. To have not trusted my instincts when if felt wrong but what do I know I am just the patient. I was the talk of the floor. No one would come near me except to make sure that they had marked the correct breast to be operated on. How could you miss it, there is a huge needle sticking out of it. Luckily the bright side is when it came back a needle biopsy would not have told us anything and I would have had to have this procedure anyone. It turned out to me a fibrosis tumor. I have fibrosis cysts in my breasts and so this really was not too uncommon. It is nothing to be worried about. Strange how the pain that I had when I first found the lump remand after they took the tumor out. It was very strange.
I guess all of these things have kind of made me paranoid when it comes to doctors. I don’t always take the first answer these days. Does it mean I take my kids to the doctor more then I should maybe? To continue with the paranoia though my pediatrician and my allergist have helped to keep that going for me. When Ainsley first got allergies and I had told her all the symptoms she had this is what I was told. It could be a cold, but colds don’t usually last this long, it could be allergies, it could be a sinus infection, or it could be leukemia. What? What did you just say? Not likely but she does have many of the symptoms so if it persists we will do a blood test. They did end up doing the blood test. Most of me knew it was not that but then you never know do you. In the end she just has allergies, asthma, and needed her tonsils and adenoids out. Abby had many sinus infections when she was 18 months. The allergist said that sometimes a lot of mucus in the sinuses could be an indication of cystic fibrosis so she has been checked for that. Did he really think she could possible have it or was it an unnecessary test. I don’t know but once they put it in your mind even if you are fairly sure that is not it, it is hard not to have the test just to make sure. Which brings me to another interesting point. I had a doctor tell me in all of this that it depends on what a doctor has seen or read recently on how they treat your child. She said for awhile there was a lot of literature on taking the tonsils out no matter what so people did that then they read something else about how it is bad so they don’t take them out. I had a friend who when she was pregnant went to a doctor because she had not felt the baby in awhile and the office had just had the same thing happen a few hours before but the baby had died and so they put her through a lot of test and really freaked out when she came in because it was fresh in their minds. Some days though they have probably seen several people like that and think not another one. You never know what you are going to get.
When I was pregnant with Abby she moved all the time. I was just thinking about her moving and she did, I kid you not. So one night I woke up and thought I did not feel her move before I went to sleep and I could not get her to move at that moment but I was so tired I thought it was fine. I woke up again and I could not get her to move but I thought it is ok. In the morning I still could not get her to move. I walked around the house; I drank ice water orange juice and still nothing so I panicked. I called the doctor. By the time he called back she was doing flips. I don’t think I overreacted because this was so unusual for her. The doctor still made me go to the hospital to labor and delivery to have me monitored. I think I was 32 or 33 weeks pregnant. I felt stupid going but it is nice to have someone check you to be on the safe side. Of course everyone was looking at us like we were crazy for being there and by then we were not scared and just cracking jokes at each other to make the memories of the horrible moments go away so I am sure they thought why are you here. My doctor told me to and I do what he says because I trust him and I feel like I was able to carry a baby to term because of him so I listen to what he says. That was why I was there.
I remember going to the ER when I had a miscarriage, which is a stupid thing to do, never go there for that when you are early on. I got scared though. I was in a lot of pain and I didn’t really have a good doctor at the time and they had blown me off when I had called earlier in the day. There was a lot of blood and I was not sure if it was normal or what to do so I went. To survive the dreaded ER David tried to cheer me up by telling me terrible sadistic jokes. It kept my mind off it but I am sure people were looking at me like why are you hear if you are laughing. They probably missed the part where I had to go to the bathroom every ten minutes and the person who took my blood stuck me four times because he could not get it. Not to mention the worst part of having the ultrasound and the very uncaring tech that is there at midnight.
Which brings me to the blood test I had after my miscarriage. I debate when I go to have them take blood if I should tell them I am a hard stick. Some get mad that you told them and say things like you don’t have confidence in my. Some don’t listen and just do it. The thing is it is best out of my hand, which creeps people out but better to be stuck once in your hand then fours time in your arm. On this day I was a mess and there where kids there and that made it worse for me. I had to wait a long time. When they did call me back they could not get it and so everyone came to stare. There is a waiting room full of people and they are all in watching me. They cannot get so they were laughing at each other and she was not paying attention and hit my nerve. I went through the roof and starting balling. Everyone scattered immediately and not one person bothered to offer and apology or a Kleenex. It was a year before it did not hurt to touch that spot and I am so mad at myself for not saying something to a supervisor.
I will quit with one last thing, I sure I could go on but this post is to long already. When Ainsley had her tonsils and adenoids out they gave her I think vicodin in liquid form. She has a terrible gage reflex and it use to not be that uncommon for her to throw up at the dinner table when trying something new she did not like. She could not stand this medicine. The nurse was able to get it down her two to three times before they sent her home but she really fought her the last time. We got home and for two days I tried to give her this medicine. I tried to flavor it myself, I tried to bribe her, I tried to explain that it was the best thing for her and that it would make her feel better. I tried to hold her down and give it to her. I tried it all. By the second day she would not even swallow her spit. She would not take anything because it her so bad. I could not think of anything else to do so I called the doctor for suggestions. I had liked him up tell this point. When he called back he did not sound happy, I was clearly bothering him. I was told that I was a parent and I needed to do my job and force her to take it. That she was 4 almost 5 and I should be able to reason with her to get it down otherwise I should hold her down and force it down her throat. That I better do something because it would be worse to put her in the hospital for dehydration. Gee I was not aware that would be bad. No other advice except to make me feel like s***. By the way she had literally woken up 10 times that night. It was worse then a newborn. I waited a week. I keep thinking I was a bad parent. She would scream at me and refuse to take it. That probably did not help the healing process so when she was not better after ten days I took her to my pediatrician. I basically went in crying to her begged her to do something. We had not slept and Ainsley was still miserable after ten days. She wrote me a prescriptions for Tylenol with codeine and added a prescription for flavor x and Ainsley was fine. I actually felt better about giving my 4 year old tylenol with codeine rather then vicodin anyway, not sure if it really is better but it made me feel better. Why could he have not thought of that? Maybe other 4 years can be reasoned with but she was not one of them. It made her gage she thought she was going to throw up and she was not doing it no matter what. I did not like him after that and Abby probably should have had her adenoids out but I did not push it because I did not want him touching my children again. By the way the practice that I go to would not let you switch doctors once you have seen one of them. If I ever have to go back I will have to see what other options I have. The bad part is I really had liked him before that. Was he just having an off day? I have to say that was one of the lowest days of motherhood for me.

Tommy can throw up on a dime too if he eats something he doesn't like. I am not sure if he is really good at the drama or if there is some sort of gag reflex he has. He did have terrible reflux as a baby. So interesting that Ainsley can do that too. I just figured all kids can do that - what do I know! Can they?
I can go on and on about healthcare, but the one thing I will say is you need to stand up for yourself and do your own research! You have to ask questions and be involved and if your doctor doesn't like it, move on to a different doctor. That goes for peds too! Whenever I am in the hospital - and it has been far too many times to count - I always feel bad for the elderly in there that have no one to speak for them. You can't be at their mercy, it needs to be a partnership. Every time they give me a med, I ask what it is. Not to be annoying, but I have caught them trying to give me things that they stopped giving me because I had a reaction to it. They are all only human and mistakes can be made.
I will say that I have met some absolutely wonderful nurses - and doctors - in my day! To me, the best nurses are those that really have a calling for it. Some shouldn't be nurses, but those are few and far between.
My doctors call me at home. I know that is weird, but I like my "team!" MY GI called me yesterday to ask how my leg was doing.
My last surgeon was a female. I loved her because she just had a different approach in a bad situation. She would sit on the bed and talk to me. She was so dedicated to all her patients that it seemed she never went home. She operated on me at 10 at night!
You have to find the right team, be informed, and ask questions! - October 3, 2008 9:16 AM

Oops, I forgot to say that we also have being a hard stick in common! 2x ago, it took 5 people to get some out of me. I think mine just know better and hide!

Laura I cannot believe you read it. If I would have looked at this on someones blog I probably would have skipped it. I figured I would put it there though since I did not have a blog at the time it was nice to write about. Trust me I learned from my one time that you know what you are having done and if things feel weird there is a reason. It all worked out though so I guess I cannot get to mad.
I don't think it is common to throw up easily. My friends kids have hardly ever thrown up but then they did not have reflux and both my kids had it pretty bad.
There are some great doctors out there and I have had those and maybe someday I will do a post on the wonderful doctors but this one was about me complaining.
When I go in for blood now I tell them I want a butterfly needle and I would like it out of my hand but if they do not feel comfortable with that then try my harm but know it is usually really hard. I also want to hug the people when they get it the first try. When I had Abby the nurse had to get the Anestesialogists to put in my iv because she could not do it. In fact it held up my c-section because it took so long to put in and you need so much fluid in you before they can do the surgery. I think they put it into me a little faster then they normally do so it would not mess up the surgery schedule for everyone else. - October 3, 2008 9:36 AM

I've had a few bad experiences (remember the swinging stirrup?). But I agree with Laura when she says, but the one thing I will say is you need to stand up for yourself and do your own research!
Mitch was a prime example of this. He was the general contractor so to speak of his medical business and maybe that's why he lived so dang long despite his serious issues. - October 3, 2008 1:03 PM

Jilene, another blood draw hint for you - bring a jacket and keep your arms covered, even in the summer. They keep those places so cold and that makes it harder.
I am surprised that they just started using butterfly needles on you. I don't know any other kind :).
I did read most of it :) I had to skim in a couple spots, but I got the gist, I think.
Tommy does gag really easily, so perhaps I should mention that next time I take him in. He can throw up easily when he coughs too - I think too easily. In Kindergarten, he threw up in the sand from coughing. How embarrassing for him! If he is sick, he needs to sleep with a bucket in case he has a coughing jag. I just figured kids are like this - so thank you for letting me know it shouldn't be that easy.... - October 3, 2008 4:04 PM

Have a Sense of Humor and Don't be a Hipocrit
The other thing is people being such hypocrites. It is one thing to change your mind and have a different opinion because you learn more information that is not what is happening here. Bill O'Reily went off about how horrible Jamie Lynn Spears and her parents were when she got pregnant at 16(I think that is how old she is). He said they are the absolute worst parents and just went on and on about them. Palin's daughter gets pregnant and he says leave her alone and let the family work this out in private. I got the impression that he thought they were a great family but she just make one mistake. Believe me I agree leave them alone but why is it ok for her and not for Jamie Lynn. Is there really a difference here.
McCain went on the view the other day and their was discussion about how they should not have asked him tough questions and attacked him. Someone who I cannot remember recently said this is not a date. We are not just trying to find out the fluff stuff about these candidates. They are interviewing for the President and Vice President they need to answer the tough questions no matter who is asking them. If they want it they should be prepared. It is great to give someone a chance at a job when they don't have experience but not for President or Vice President. That to me is so different, you better be prepared.
I feel like the Republicans seem whiny and desperate at the moment. Every time I turn on the TV they are complaining about something else. Both sides need to get over it, everyone stop slinging mud and tell me how are you going to fix the economy, the education system, the health care system, and so on. I am very frustrated at our politicians and our median right now as I am sure many are. I was actually thinking this was going to be a great election and I thought it would be fascinating. I am so disappointed by it now.
I am done ranting and raving for the night.

I wish someone would publish just a listing, a comprehensive listing, of the issues and where the candidates stand - more importantly, their plan to fix it! Period. No sound bites. No BS. Just straight forward. Let me read it and then it would be easier to decide. That will never happen because I think these candidates don't know specifically how to fix the issues at this time. The President doesn't really make any changes alone anyway.
I guess some of this stuff comes from living in a free society. I wouldn't want to be in the public eye for all the money in the world. So, why would anyone super great want to do it for what the President makes....
I guess you can tell that I don't think either candidate is top-notch. :) - September 18, 2008 6:45 PM

To me, last night McCain seemed whiney and unnecessarily arrogant. I mean you need confidence to be leader of the country however, his comes across in a way that gives me the creeps and annoys me. And if he ever utters the name "Joe" again during this campaign or says "My Friends" I'm gonna scream. Or maybe turn it into a drinking game...
You have to check out Margaret and Helen's Blog if you haven't...cracks me up!

David and his friend John were going to do that last night with "My Friends". I said I would be drunk halfway through the debate if I had to take a shot every time "My Friends" comes out of his mouth.
